Corporate social responsibility practised in the Maldives

To begin discussing on corporate social responsibility (CSR) we have to understand what meant by it. Ghillyer (2012 p. 66) states that CSR is ‘The actions of an organization that are targeted toward achieving a social benefit over and above maximizing profits for its shareholders and meeting all its legal obligations.

CSR is something introduce very recently to the corporate world. Therefore it is new concept in the Maldives as well. This is the reason why very few companies practice it with in the society.

There are few types of CSR. One of them is the strategic CSR. Organisations that practise this type of CSR participate in philanthropic activities that will generate most positive publicity for the organization.

In the Maldives strategic CSR is commonly used. Companies including Albatross International Pvt Ltd, Ooredoo Maldives, Dhiraagu, State Trading Organization plc. The activities that these companies that engage are sponsoring of events (mainly sports events) and activities related to education and health care.

Moreover companies also provide donations to local and international (non-governmental organization) NGO. Recently there has been an increase in formation of local NGOs in Maldives. Some of the local NGOs are mentioned below:

  1. Tiny Hearts of Maldives
  2. Maldives Autism Association
  3. Care Society
  4. Society for Health Education (SHE)
  5. Blue Peace

Most of these NGOs are also nonprofit organisations as well.
